There are millions of us alive right now collaborating to repair what’s broken and nurture what’s possible for all life on this planet. This school exists as a reminder that your efforts are also part of a global effort. Every action taken to slow harm and/or nurture life is taken in collaboration with each other across this planet, and SGT is a place where you can meet each other, learn, empower, and grow together.
Whether you’re among the marchers, the caregivers, the builders, the composters, the community organizers, the parents, the steadfast hopefuls…..
If you’re tending to life, you’re a do-gooder, and you belong in this place where spells are cast towards a livable future of all beings.
30+ years ago, the Buddhist Scholar Joanna Macy (founding influence for this school) energized a term for a global movement on behalf of life: She called it The Great Turning.
This term encapsulates our moment in time. When social, political, and climate crises have disoriented clear visions of a livable future for all beings. And also when the largest, non-local, planet-wide movement to fight for life on this planet is actively occurring. Both are happening. Both are alive.

The Great Turning
Efforts to slow the damage being done to Earth and its beings through direct action, legal changes, and community defense.
These are ways we come together and act that slow harm, stop destruction, and buy time. Examples include court injunctions, boycotts, and community defense.
These are the ways we energize and build new and remembered ways of organizing resources that sustain life, such as food, water, economy, ways of living, and relationships. There are almost countless ways taking shape in these times.
How we see each other, how we relate, and how we take care — this is how change is sustained. These are the artists, educators, people in therapeutics, spiritual teachers, and many more.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers.
You will always find people who are helping.’”
